Things I Wish Someone Would Have Told Me

This is part 3 of an ongoing series of opening an independent store.

You will have to fold shirts every. single. day. However, a flip-folder makes the task almost enjoyable. Almost.

A 115 year old building has issues. Even if it is newly remodeled. Haha. In reality, our building (built in 1896) is awesome and the issues are really minor - like the door blows open if the wind blows north.

As the owner of a neighbor business commented the other day - Having a business is like having a second house. Which you have to clean every day. Bah.

Our neighbors at Tame Magazine bring dogs to work. Lots of them.

So, you can go over there and get your pet fix. This is their newest foster. Can you stand it? Cuteness overload!!!

If, perchance, you're interested in adopting him:

You will meet totally awesome people. The area where our store is (C-Street in Springfield, MO) is a tight-knit artsy/creative community with quite the cast of characters. Plus, we have the best customers and the greatest artisans that we carry.

I Wanted to Meet New People...

This is part 2 of an ongoing series of opening an independent store.

I've been spending all my spare time at the store, trying to get ready for the opening. Yesterday, I had a lot of other stuff to get done, so I didn't go down to the store.

I decided to stop by in the afternoon, and what did I see? A fire truck and two firefighters looking in my windows. My heart sank for a minute, before I realized that if it was anything serious, there'd be more than one truck. Turns out, they were just checking buildings and did an impromptu inspection on our place.

Today I was expecting packages, so I went down early. We have 2 hour parking AND a no parking zone in front, neither of which are enforced. I parked my car, and was looking out the windows and guess what? There's a cop placing a ticket on my windshield! GAH! I went out and talked to them; apparently they're trying to do some enforcement. Yay for being a guinea pig, and yeah, it's my fault for parking where I shouldn't have been. The officer was super nice (as are most of the first responders in town) and even gave me tips to fight it!

In the end though, I'll just pay it and chalk it up to a lesson learned.

The Myth of Plastic Bins

We all use them for storage & organization. The question is, do they really work or are they a myth? What am I talking about? Plastic storage bins, of course!

I use them, but I don't really feel organized. In some aspects, I know they help me, but in other aspects, I feel like it's out of sight, out of mind.

This is some of my stash of yarn. It's all sorted by color, and the bins are stacked 5 or 6 tall. I do think that this helps with the organization of the overstock & stash, as I can easily go straight for whatever color I need. In fact, the yarn that's on top is what I had pulled out to cut. And, no, I don't need into the bins every time I make fibers. That's what this is for:

Oh yes -- this is organized! All sorted by color, so I can easily see what I have, what I want, and what I need. And yeah, that's an exercise bike that I use to hang stuff on. I prefer to think of the fibers as handlebar streamers.

However, when it comes to other items, I feel totally disorganized! This is a picture of one of my workrooms. In these bins, it's all fabric.

And it is totally disorganized. I've basically decided that I'm not sure it *can* be organized. I've tried sorting it by color - doesn't work. By type (quilters cotton, knit, silk, rayon, etc) that works better, but doesn't help when trying to put stuff together. By size - well, that was almost pointless. That only helped if I wanted to make something that needed a lot of yardage.

But, I'm told - we're all told - every time I go to the store that just a couple more bins, and it'll all become organized. It's like a siren's song, whispering in your ear "Take me home, I'll help you. Just a couple more, and it'll be organizational bliss."

It's JUNE!

It's JUNE already. And it's already the 2nd of June. Where did the first half (okay 5/12s) of the year go? School's (mostly) out, it's almost summer, and the farmer's markets are open. Time just keeps slipping away!

Since it's June, I've got a few things to take care of here:

1.) For June, I'm running a special in my beckandcallgirl shop. Spend $20, and get a free Hey Shorty fibers, while supplies last. No need to add it to your cart, I'll add it to your order when I ship.

2.) The winner of the 99 Bottles giveaway is #11, InsanityKim. I'll be in touch shortly! She wins an item of her choice from SparkleCandy!

3.) I've got a bunch of goodies to share, from a ton of great sellers. Included in this will be some more fun giveaways. So stay tuned.

4.) Plus, if you have a blog, you can check out some soap from a new Etsy seller - fo' free! Nothing But Soap wants to get the word out about their goodies, and is sending sample sizes if you'll check out their soap & mention it.
